"Tom Gustin is, quite simply, the master. He has a sixth sense about the body, how it works, why it's ailing you, and what he can do to fix it. There are bodyworkers with excellent hands, but none who combine those hands with such gifted instinct. I have never failed to get off his table feeling looser, freer, taller and so lucky to have found a bodyworker as talented as he."
–Lisa Wolfe, writer & author
"My Rolfing with Tom has had a tremendous impact on both my physical and my mental health. My posture improved, my TMJ disappeared. Beyond that, I've become more conscious of my body, my thoughts, and their relationship to one another. I am most grateful."
–Forsyth Harmon, writer and illustrator
I was curious to see if what I had heard was true: Rolfing sinks its hands into the emotional side of things. I was a professional actor. I was up for plugging into anything that would fuel my imagination, deepen my range.
What surprised me was how simple and uncomplicated it was. My job was to breathe and pay attention. Be present. The rest took care of itself, fell into place.
It was an astonishing journey, not loud, but quiet. Without the need for words or metaphors, Rolfing opened me to currents of my life that had always seemed out of reach. Every session, I was aware of sensations, connections, memories, mental pictures and images. Stuff rising up, stuff letting go.
Looking back, I see that the heart of my quest was in discovering a way to let go of estrangement. Heal myself with my own friendship. The judgement, the tightness, the dark places, none of them were really real anyway, so letting go of them was no big deal.
What was real was the quiet discovery that I was home, on friendly terms with myself. It was authentic. I could take that feeling into the world and know it was true.
By the end of the tenth session, it was clear I had stumbled on my true calling. Rolfing seemed like the right thing to do. It still is.
